Despite two visits to the penitentiary due to drug problems, Gene Ammons was a prolific and popular recording artist, a richly toned, warm sounding tenorist, who contributed to what became known as 'soul jazz'. His accessible style was tied to the blues and R&B traditions but, nonetheless, he held a distinctive niche, especially as a balladeer.
